Sarah Hepp (b. 1987) is a Swiss artist based in Zurich. Her work is defined and inspired by her interest in different kinds of beliefs. It is belief that compels religious pilgrims to journey to holy places and visit relics to receive healing or blessing. It is a collective agreement and belief that paper money or a virtual number on an online bank account has real value. Isn’t it a kind of belief that makes us want that sweater from Gucci so much more than a similar no-name garment?
Sarah is interested in when and how this dynamic of belief operates in the field of art and in her own artwork. She observes herself and her social milieu carefully to find inspiration in mundane situations in wich belief motivates behavior. Her works take shape around current trends such as body detox or digital detox.
Sarah’s repertoire includes a range of mediums from painting to sculpture to the use of industrial manufacturing techniques. The thread of quirkiness running through her works comes from a blend of deep thinking and a sense of humour. Influences from the language of advertising and graphic design can be seen in the choice of forms and colours.
Her creative career started with an apprenticeship as a graphic designer (2002-2006). After a decade of experience in advertising agencies and in the event industry, she decided to focus on the field of art and obtained a bachelors degree in Fine Arts at the Zurich University of Arts (2013-2016). Currently she is working on her masters degree at the same university.
